EVANSTON, Ill. – Four Wildcats were honored by the league coaches and media as the Big Ten Conference announced its annual postseason awards today (March 4). Maggie Lyon (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year by both the coaches and the media, making her the first Wildcat in program history to win the conference’s rookie of the year award.
Lyon also was tabbed Honorable Mention All-Big Ten by the media, along with seniors Kendall Hackney (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame), Dannielle Diamant (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gorman) and sophomore guard Karly Roser (Hamilton, Ontario/Saint Mary’s). Hackney also received Third-Team All-Big Ten accolades from the coaches while Diamant was honorable mention. Additionally, senior Kate Popovec was the Northwestern recipient for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.
As the first Wildcat to take home Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors, Lyon had an impressive first season in Evanston, averaging 12.8 points (second on the team), 4.0 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 1.5 steals and had a team high 52 3-point field goals. A unanimous selection for the Big Ten All-Freshman Team, she led all conference rookies in points, steals and 3-point field goals, while ranking second in rebounds and third in assists. A four-time Big Ten Freshman of the Week honoree, Lyon is currently on streak of 12 consecutive games scoring in double figures and has scored 10+ points in 20 of her 24 games played this year.
Hackney caps her Northwestern career as a three-time All-Big Ten honoree after taking home honorable mention honors from the media in 2011 and 2012. The senior forward led NU in scoring during the regular season, averaging 13.8 points per game to rank 12th in the Big Ten. She also contributed 5.9 rebounds per game and shot .388 from 3-point range, which was sixth in the conference. Hackney has never missed a game in her Wildcat career and is the NU record-holder, playing 125 games the last four seasons. She also ranks amongst the top 10 in NU history in points, rebounds, blocks and 3-point field goals.
Diamant becomes a two-time All-Big Ten honoree after receiving third-team accolades by the coaches and honorable mention distinction from the media last season. This year, she is averaging career highs in rebounds (7.6, seventh in the Big Ten), minutes (30.4), assists (2.0) and blocks (1.5, seventh in the Big Ten).
Roser is a first-time All-Big Ten honoree after averaging career-highs in points (9.3), assists (6.3) and rebounds (5.0) during the 2012-13 regular season. The sophomore ranked second in the Big Ten in assists (6.3), 15th in steals (1.7) and 10th in minutes (35.5). Roser accumulated 182 assists during the regular season, which sits at ninth in NU single-season history.
Northwestern had four players receive All-Big Ten consideration for the first time since 1993, when Patricia Babcock (HM), Moira Kennelly (HM), Nancy Kennelly (Second Team) and Maureen Holohan (Second Team) were all-conference honorees.
After wrapping up the regular season on Sunday, the Wildcats now head to the 2013 Big Ten Tournament in Hoffman Estates, Ill. Northwestern is the No. 10 seed and faces seventh-seeded Iowa on Thursday, at 11:30 a.m., inside the Sears Centre. Thursday’s game will air live on the Big Ten Network.
