EVANSTON, Ill. – Maggie Lyon’s (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) streak of Big Ten Freshman of the Week awards continues as she was honored today by the conference for the third consecutive week. This is the fourth Big Ten Freshman of the Week award for Lyon and sixth overall for Northwestern freshmen this season.
Lyon earned this week’s award after averaging 12.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.5 steals in NU’s two contests last week. She was an impressive 52.6 percent from the field including 44.4 percent from 3-point range.
Lyon began the week with 11 points on 5-of-9 from the field Wednesday at Michigan State and was a key part in NU’s comeback victory against Wisconsin on Saturday. She tied for a team-high 13 points and did most of her damage in the second half. Lyon drained her second 3-pointer of the game with 3:15 remaining to tie things up at 48-48 and scored her final 3-pointer with 1:47 left, putting NU ahead for good at 53-52. Her third steal of the game with 14 seconds left helped seal the Wildcat victory.
The 6-foot-1 forward is currently on a streak of 10 games scoring in double figures, which is the longest stretch of the year for any NU player. In the last four games, she is averaging 13.5 ppg while shooting 56.4 percent from the field and 47.6 percent from 3-point range.
NU freshmen have now captured six of the Big Ten’s 16 weekly awards this season. Lyon has won the Big Ten Freshman of the Week award each week since Feb. 12 and this is her fourth accolade of the season after being honored on Dec. 10. Freshman forward Lauren Douglas was also named Big Ten Freshman of the Week twice in the first three weeks of the season.
The Wildcats play their final two games of the regular season this week, traveling to Ann Arbor Thursday for a 6 p.m. game vs. Michigan and then return home for Senior Day on Sunday at 2 p.m. vs. Iowa.
