EVANSTON, Ill. -- For the second time this season, Northwestern freshman forward Maggie Lyon (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) has been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week. The Conference announced the honor for Lyon earlier today. She contributed heavily for the Wildcats in their last two games, averaging 13.0 points and 4.0 rebounds per game.
NU played two close contents at home last week, hosting Nebraska and Ohio State. Against Nebraska, Lyon knocked down two key 3-point baskets with under six minutes remaining to spark a Northwestern rally and close the gap to 51-46 after trailing by as many as 15 points. She scored 12 points in the game, while grabbing four rebounds and dishing out two assists.
In Sunday’s game vs. Ohio State, Lyon tied a career-high by making four 3-pointers and led the Wildcats in scoring with 14 points, shooting 50 percent (5-of-10) from the field. Lyon also collected four rebounds, while helping with one assist and one steal.
This is Lyon’s second weekly honor and the fourth for a Northwestern freshman. Teammate Lauren Douglas collected two Big Ten Freshman of the Week awards of her own in November. It is the first such award for a Wildcat player during the conference portion of the schedule.
With the regular season coming to a close, Lyon and the Wildcats have a crucial road trip coming up this weekend, traveling to Minnesota to play the Golden Gophers at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 17.
