EVANSON, Ill. -- Northwestern women's basketball, in partnership with Northwestern Memorial Hospital, will host its annual breast cancer awareness day, formally known as the Pink Zone, Sunday when the Wildcats take on Penn State at noon. This year, the initiative has been re-branded as "Play4Kay" in honor of the late NC State head coach, Kay Yow, who passed away in 2009 of breast cancer.

The mission of the initiative, which was brought to life in 2007, is the same: a nation of coaches raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. For more information on the nation-wide event, please click HERE.

The event is especially near and dear to the heart of NU head coach Joe McKeown, a close friend of Yow's.

"I was very fortunate to consider Kay Yow a great friend," McKeown said. "I had the opportunity to spend a lot of time with her along with my wife, Laura, and I am still amazed at the impact she's had on so many lives. Being involved in a day that we can create more awareness in her memory is very special. What she has done for our game and also for our coaching profession will never be forgotten."

The Wildcats will honor breast cancer survivors from Northwestern Memorial's Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University and a cancer survivor will be performing the National Anthem. Additionally, there will be facts about breast cancer throughout the game and FREE t-shirts to fans arriving early. As always, the team will be showing their support for the event, sporting pink jerseys and accessories.

"It is wonderful that college athletes are helping to raise breast cancer awareness," Nora Hansen, MD, Director of the Lynn Sage Comprehensive Breast Center-Northwestern Memorial Hospital said. "One in seven women will be diagnosed with the disease in their life. Early detection is the key and the more aware people are of the disease, the better."

Other items for that day include:
    • Pregame Cheer Clinic (see PDF above)
    • Pregame National Girls and Women in Sport Day INFO
    • Free face-painting/balloon artist for all fans
    • Free poster-making station
