VIDEO: Northwestern Celebrates 2012 National Girls and Women in Sports Day

EVANSTON, Ill. – Make plans now to attend the National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) event at Welsh-Ryan Arena at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 10! The second-annual event gives girls in the 4th-12th grades the unique opportunity to interact with Northwestern student-athletes, coaches and other prominent women working in the sports industry.

“This is a great event for young girls and a great day to celebrate the growth of women’s sports," Northwestern head women's basketball coach Joe McKeown said. "The opportunities that are available today are because of the pioneers that would not take no for an answer and believed in the cause. I feel very fortunate to coach women’s basketball at a great university like Northwestern and am thankful that we are so committed to women's athletics.”

For registration information, please contact Heather Van Hoegarden Obering at h-hoegarden@northwestern.edu or by calling 847-491-7723. The registration deadline is Feb. 3 and a PDF with all pertinent information, including a registration form, can be found above.

This event runs from 1:30-2:30 p.m., prior to the game vs. Ohio State. There will be roundtable discussions that feature various topics related to women playing sports and working in athletics and participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss these topics in a small group setting.

Participants must pre-register for this event and can do so by clicking on PDF above, or can pick up a flyer at an upcoming Northwestern women’s basketball game. Tickets for the event are just $3 for participants and family members and that price covers the event, as well as a ticket to the women’s basketball game. Tickets can be picked up on the day of the event.

Here is the complete agenda for Feb. 10:

    1:15 p.m. – Check-in at the N-Club (second floor of Welsh-Ryan Arena)
    1:30 p.m. – Roundtable Discussions
    3:00 p.m. – Northwestern vs. Ohio State
    5:00 p.m. – Postgame Autograph Session

Now in its 27th year, NGWSD is celebrated in all 50 states with community-based events, award ceremonies, and activities honoring the achievements and encouraging participation of girls and women in sports. NGWSD is jointly organized by the National Girls and Women in Sport Coalition. The Coalition combines the experience and resources of four premiere girls- and women-serving organizations in the United States: Girls Incorporated, the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport, National Women's Law Center, and the Women's Sports Foundation.

More information on the national event can be found on the NGWSD website.
