    Chawansky paces NU with 16 points, eight boards

    EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Five Spartans scored in double figures, led by Maxann Reese's 21 points, as Michigan State defeated Northwestern on Sunday afternoon, 76-65. MSU improves to 8-10, 2-6 Big Ten. NU drops to 6-15, 1-8 Big Ten.

    The game was tight throughout the entire first half. With the score tied 11-11, MSU went on a 10-2 run to lead 21-13 with 7:39 left in the period. NU answered with a 12-2 run of their own to claim a 25-23 advantage with 5:03 left. MSU eventually took a 30-27 lead into halftime. The Spartans took the lead for good midway through the second half. NU tied the game at 49-49 on a Kristina Divjak six-foot jumper with 9:49 remaining. MSU went on a 15-5 run to hold a 64-54 lead with 5:22 left, and would generally maintain a double-digit cushion throughout the rest of the contest.

    Megan Chawansky led NU with 17 points, including three three-pointers, and eight rebounds. Amber DeWall tied her career high with 16 points while adding nine assists, seven boards and four steals. Dana Leonard and Kristina Divjak scored 12 points each, while Leonard collected a career-best four steals in 32 minutes off the bench. The 'Cats as a team had 13 steals for the second-straight game and forced 22 MSU turnovers. For MSU, Reese led all scorers with 21 points and tied her career high with nine assists. Bella Engen had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. The Spartans outrebounded NU, 47-35. Northwestern returns to Welsh-Ryan Arena on Fri., Jan. 30, to host Penn State at 7 p.m. CST.
