EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern women's basketball team showed great determination in erasing a significant early lead Tuesday night against Creighton, but ultimately fell short in dropping a 64-53 decision to the Bluejays at Welsh-Ryan Arena.

The win improved Creighton to 5-3, while Northwestern fell to 2-7.

After taking an early 4-2 lead, NU saw the Bluejays go on a 17-0 run spanning nearly four minutes to take a 19-4 lead. The Wildcats regained their poise, though, and gradually chipped away at the lead. By halftime the Creighton advantage was single digits, at 37-29.

The second half was more of the same, as Northwestern continued to draw closer with a mix of a strong inside presence and a big outside game. With just more than five minutes to play, Tami Sears dropped in a shot that made the score 49-47 in the Bluejays? favor.

That was as close as the ?Cats would get. Candace Bloomquist hit a 3-pointer for Creighton, and a Sears bucket was answered by another trey, this time by Traci Jones. That took the wind out of Northwestern?s sails, as the ?Jays scored the next five points to make the score 61-49 en route to the win.

Northwestern was led by Sears, who had 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Leslie Dolland added 10 points and 11 boards. For Creighton, Angela Timmons led the way with 21 points and dished out 11 assists, while Bloomquist had 13 points and 10 rebounds and Corey Sweeney added 11 points.

Northwestern is off until December 29, when the Wildcats travel to play Loyola.
