EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern took on NC State Thursday night in the seventh annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Looking for their third-straight win in the annual event, the Wildcats were unable to overcome the Wolfpack as the visitors took the 76-61 decision at Welsh-Ryan Arena.

Three Wildcats scored in the double digits, with freshman forward Nia Coffey leading the way, scoring 10+ points for her seventh game of the season producing a team-high 13 points and seven rebounds. Lauren Douglas, coming off of a career high game, was right behind her pouring in 12 points of her own. Freshman guard Ashley Deary had 10 points, just one point shy of topping her career high. Alex Cohen also grabbed seven rebounds to go along with her nine points.

NC State scored four unanswered points at the offset of the game before a layup from Cohen at 19:03. From then, the game saw a close match up with neither team maintaining the lead for too long. Northwestern traded baskets with the Wolfpack for the first 16 minutes of the half until two free throws and a 3-pointer from the visiting team helped the Wolfpack take a 12-point lead into halftime. Cohen had a solid first half, leading the team with nine points.

Northwestern struggled to chip away at the lead in the second half. Despite shooting 41.9 percent from the field the Wildcats could not sneak past NC State. Wolfpack center Markeisha Gatling scored 14 points in the second half alone leading her team to victory. She led all scorers with 20 points on 8-of-11 from the field.

Northwestern has a break before they take the road Saturday, Dec. 14 to visit Loyola at 2 p.m. CT.
