EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern improved to 3-0 on the season Monday night at Welsh-Ryan Arena, taking down the Howard Bison 61-45. Three Wildcats finished in double figures including freshman guard Maggie Lyon and senior forward/center Dannielle Diamant leading the way with 16 points apiece while senior forward Kendall Hackney chipped in 15. Sophomore guard Karly Roser reached the double-digit mark in boards, grabbing 10 rebounds to go along with nine assists and five points.

Northwestern took awhile to find its offensive rhythm, and as a result, the lead swung back and forth for the first 10 minutes of the game. Hackney was able to get it going early, scoring six of NU’s first 11 points.

After falling behind 8-7, the ’Cats went on a 15-6 run to take a 22-14 lead with just under six minutes to go in the first half.

The score was stuck at that margin for the next three minutes until a pair of Diamant free throws extended the Wildcat lead even further. Another bucket by Diamant stretched the Northwestern run to 19-6 and gave them a 26-14 halftime lead.

Despite holding Howard scoreless for the last 7:30 of the half, Northwestern wasn’t able to pull away, largely because of the Bison’s ability to rebound the ball on the offensive glass. Howard grabbed 12 offensive rebounds in the first half alone but wasn’t able to convert them into points.

NU played suffocating defense, holding the Bison to just 5-35 (14.3 percent) shooting through the first 20 minutes and forcing them to commit seven turnovers.

The second half began in stark contrast to the first with both teams scoring quick and often. Howard came right out of the gates, grabbing the first four points. Northwestern answered back with seven straight of their own to extend the lead to 15.

Lyon stretched the Northwestern lead to 16 with 14:38 to play on her fourth 3-pointer of the game.

The lead remained in double-digits with both teams trading baskets for the next seven minutes until a Hackney fast break lay-up made it a 17-point game with 7:29 left. The ’Cats weren’t done, as they continued to build their lead. A pair of free throws from Hackney pushed the score to 56-34.

Howard scored a couple quick baskets in the last minute to pull the score closer, but Northwestern prevailed, 61-45, as the clock hit zeroes.

The Wildcats shot 43.8 percent from the field while limiting Howard to just 22.4 percent on the night. Lyon drained four of Northwestern’s six 3-pointers.

NU returns to Welsh-Ryan Arena Wednesday, Nov. 21 at 11 a.m., hosting Yale in its second of three games this week. The Wildcats then wrap up the week on Sunday, Nov. 25 for the team’s annual Autism Awareness Game, at 2 p.m. against Loyola.
