    Wildcats Named to WBCA Academic Honor Roll

    EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Northwestern women's basketball team earned the 14th-highest grade point average last year among all NCAA Division I women's basketball programs, it was announced this afternoon by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). Northwestern was the only Big Ten Conference school ranked among the top 25 academic teams in the country with a team GPA of 3.267.

    The Wildcats were one of six teams from last year's NCAA tournament to make the WBCA Academic Honor Roll. The other five NCAA tournament teams to make the WBCA honor roll were Oregon (fourth), Toledo (fifth), Maine (seventh), Kansas State (eighth) and Harvard (15th).

    Northwestern finished 17-10 overall last year and in fourth place in the Big Ten at 9-7.

    The Wildcats also led the NCAA in three-point shooting a year ago, averaging 7.3 three pointers made per game. NU opens the 1997-98 season Fri., Nov. 14, hosting Southern Illinois in the first round of the Preseason NIT at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
