    Women's Basketball Selected to Play in Preseason Women's NIT

    EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Northwestern Wildcats have earned one of 16 invitations to the 1997 Preseason Women's NIT basketball tournament. NU will host a first-round game on Fri., Nov. 14, in Welsh-Ryan Arena against intrastate-rival Southern Illinois. The second round will be held Sun., Nov. 16, with the semifinals on Nov. 20 and the finals on Nov. 21.

    Northwestern concluded last season 17-11 overall and took fourth place in the Big Ten at 9-7. The Wildcats earned a berth to the NCAA Tournament, where the 'Cats fell in the first round to George Washington. NU also finished the 1996-97 season as the NCAA's top three-point shooting team, hitting an average of 7.2 threes per game (202 in 28 games). The 'Cats finished second in the NCAA in three-point percentage at 40.9 percent.

    The Wildcats return the junior All-Big Ten tandem of forward Kristina Divjak (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central) and Megan Chawansky (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake). Divjak is the top returning scorer in the Big Ten at 18.9 points per game, as well as three-point field goal percentage. Divjak finished fifth in the NCAA last year in three point percentage, hitting 44.2 percent from beyond the arc. Chawansky finished eighth in the conference in assists (3.7 apg) and 10th in scoring (15.9 ppg), and led the Wildcats in rebounding (6.3 rpg).
