EVANSTON, Ill.-- Friends and supporters of Northwestern Athletics and the late head football coach Randy Walker gathered at Ryan Field on Sunday, July 27 to honor his memory and celebrate his life at the third annual Run For Walk.

On a warm and sun-splashed morning, hundreds and hundreds of runners and walkers gathered in the east lot at Ryan Field to begin the third event. The race, a 4.1-mile run and a 5K family walk, took participants through the tree-lined streets of Evanston and along the scenic shore of Lake Michigan on Northwestern's unique campus. Everyone finished on the 50-yard line at historic Ryan Field. The unique race distance of 4.1 miles harkens back to Walker's uniform number, 41, when he was a student-athlete at Miami University.

Prior to the 7:30 a.m. start, Coach Walker's wife, Tammy, and current head football coach Pat Fitzgerald, addressed the participants and offered words of encouragement. Both spoke of his love for Northwestern, the surrounding neighborhood and the family's beloved dog, Magic.

James Akita of Elmhurst, Ill. was the top finished Sunday, posting a final time of 21:38, just 21 seconds ahead of Chicago's Ryan Hopper. Jeremy Rustonof Algonquin, Ill. finished third overall in 22:08.

Pamela Staton of Ingleside, Ill. led the female finishers in a time of 24:!4 Sunday. Stephanie Hughes of Chicago clocked in with a time of 25:53 and another Chicago resident, Elizabeth Chenoweth was third at 26:33.
