2013 Midlands Brackets and Team Standings -- End of Session III
EVANSTON, Ill. – After the third session of the 51st Ken Kraft Midlands Championships, Northwestern’s Pierce Harger, seeded No. 7 wrestled strong beginning in wrestlebacks to earn a spot in the third place match.
The ‘Cats finished with four wrestlers alive in wrestlebacks fighting for fifth and third place finishes. After the third session, NU stood in eighth place out of 57 schools with 58.5 points.
The final session of the 51st Ken Kraft Midlands Championships begins at 8:00 p.m. CT, being broadcast live on the Big Ten Network.
Harger began the morning session winning via fall (5:27) against Northern Iowa’s Curt Maas. Harger began the match with a takedown and went up 5-0. Harger scored another takedown to go up 7-2 with 0:28 in the second period. Harger earned the bonus points for the ‘Cats, getting the fall with 1:33 in the third.
Against Indian’s No. 8 Rylan LeBlanc, Harger went up 4-1 and didn’t look back, advancing with a 6-3 decision. Harger advanced to the third place match after defeating Northern Iowa’s Cooper Moore, recording a pin at 4:20.
In the third place match at 165 lbs., Harger will take on Michigan’s Taylor Massa, wrestling unattached and seeded No. 3.
In Session III, No. 5 Alex Polizzi (197 lbs.) made quick work of Cornell College’s Alex Coolidge, winning by major decision 9-0. Polizzi advanced by defeating the Minnesota Storm’s Joe Rau with a pin at 3:42 before falling to No. 3 seed Nathan Burak of Iowa.
Polizzi will square off against top-seeded Mario Gonzalez from Illinois in the fifth place match.
No. 12 Pat Greco entered the 141 lbs. semifinals with a difficult challenge facing No. 1 seed Mitchell Port from Edinboro. Port scored on a takedown early in the first period and led 2-0. The No. 1 ended the match recording a fall with just seven seconds remaining in the third round.
Greco remained alive in the wrestlebacks, but fell to F&M’s Rick Durso on a 3-1 decision. Greco advanced to the fifth place match, where he’ll take on Indiana’s Ethan Raley.
Michigan’s Eric Grajales upset Northwestern’s No. 1 seed Jason Tsirtsis at 149 lbs., recording a 6-3 win in the semifinals. Tsirtsis began the match leading 2-1 before Grajales took a 5-3 lead with a takedown and two nearfall points in the third.
Tsirtsis was able to make up riding time but could not finish the comeback, losing for the first time on the season. The redshirt freshman from Crown Point, Ind. fell to Iowa’s Brody Grothus 8-4 in the consolation bracket.
Tsirtsis will face Wisconsin’s Rylan Lubeck in the 149 lbs. fifth place bout.
