EVANSTON, Ill. -- The voting is closed for the third round of the All-Time Greatest Midlands Wrestler competition and we have paired our field of 32 down to just four legendary wrestlers. Before we start with the next round, let’s take a look and see how round three played out.

    Small Weight Class:
Tom Brands over Randy Lewis, 62-38

The run ends for Randy Lewis, who did most of his damage in the 80’s but recently made a short comeback. Tom Brands wins the small weight class somewhat decisively, setting up a semifinal between two Iowa coaches.

    Medium Weight Class:
Dan Gable over Dave Schultz, 86-14

To the surprise of no one, Dan Gable wins the medium weight class with relative ease. A good run for Schultz, but Gable will now take on his protégée, Tom Brands.

    Large Weight Class:
Cael Sanderson over Joe Williams, 60-40

The closest match of this round belongs to Sanderson and Williams. Sanderson is considered by many to be the best NCAA wrestler of all time, but this is a Midlands competition and no one has a better Midlands pedigree than Joe Williams, winner of 10 straight titles and 55 straight matches from 1994-2003. While that kept it close, Sanderson’s reputation precedes him and he will be heading to the semifinals for an epic match with Bruce Baumgartner.

    XL Weight Class:
Bruce Baumgartner over  Ben Peterson, 83-17

It was a little closer for Baumgartner this round, and for the first time he doesn’t have the most lopsided win of the round (that title went to Dan Gable), but once again he is through with ease. Baumgartner has proven he is a titan at heavyweight, blowing through his opponents with over 90 percent of the total vote over the first three rounds. That looks to change, though, with a matchup against Cael Sanderson in the semifinals.

And with that, the third round is in the books. Now it is time to pare down the field even further! Voting for the semifinals will end Thursday, Dec. 27. Make sure to vote for your favorites.
