EVANSTON, Ill. -- The voting is closed for the second round of the All-Time Greatest Midlands Wrestler competition and we have paired our field of 32 down to eight legendary wrestlers. Before we start with the next round, let’s take a look and see how round two played out.

    Small Weight Class:

Tom Brands over Mark Ironside, 78-22
Randy Lewis over Terry Brands, 63-37

Tom Brands may have only won one Midlands title to Mark Ironside’s four, but Ironside doesn’t have an Olympic Gold medal, a world championship and three NCAA titles. Brands made quick work of Ironside. Randy Lewis, himself an Olympic gold medalist with an impressive career at Iowa, outscored Terry Brands to prevent an all-Brands final in the small weight class.

    Medium Weight Class:

Dan Gable over Lee Kemp, 80-20

Dave Schultz over Kenny Monday, 57-43

The medium weights were arguably the most loaded of all the weight classes in the semifinals.  Dan Gable didn’t quite dominate to the level that he did in round one, but did score a decisive win over Lee Kemp. In a battle of the titans, the late great Dave Schultz outpaced Kenny Monday in a close vote. Gable vs. Schultz promises to be one of the best matchups of the coming round.

    Large Weight Class:

Cael Sanderson over Ed Banach, 88-12

Joe Williams over Chris Campbell, 78-22

Cael Sanderson won another very decisive victory, this time over three-time Midlands Champion, three-time NCAA Champion and gold medalist Ed Banach. Ten-time Midlands champion Joe Williams handled Chris Campbell with ease as well. This sets up a matchup between one of the most decorated wrestlers in Midlands history and one of the most decorated wrestlers in the history of the NCAA.

    XL Weight Class:

Bruce Baumgartner over Bill Scherr, 93-7

Ben Peterson over Steve Neal, 56-44

For the second straight round, this weight class had both the closest and most one-sided match-ups of the round. Bruce Baumgartner again tallied the most decisive victory of the second round with a 93-7 win over Bill Scherr. Ben Peterson’s victory over Steve Neal was a little bit dramatic, as Neal and Peterson traded the lead throughout the voting. In the end, Peterson pulled away and set up a match with Baumgartner in the XL Weight Class Final.

And with that, the second round is in the books.  Now it is time to pare down the field even further! Voting for the third round will end Sunday, December 23. Make sure to vote for your favorites.
