    EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern head coach Drew Pariano announced today the signing of current high school seniors Jacob Schmitt (Dewitt, Mich./St. Johns) and Mitch Sliga (Fishers, Ind./Fishers) to National Letters of Intent to wrestle for NU beginning in 2013. Schmitt is projected to compete at 133 lbs. for the Wildcats while Sliga is at 184 lbs.

    High School: Two-time MHSAA State Champion … Two-time Michigan Grappler Wrestler of the Year … Three-time Lansing State Journal Wrestler of the Year … Three-time CAAC Conference Champion … Five-time Fargo All-American … Fargo National Champion … Runner-up at Super-32 to reach All-America status … Three-time FILA All-American … Four-year letterwinner … Posted a freshman record of 50-2, went 55-2 as a sophomore and 48-2 as a junior (three-year total of 153-6) … St. Johns high school won three Division 2 State Championships and ranked in the top 10 nationally … Competed against fellow NU signee Mitch Sliga … Honor roll … Renaissance Club member.

    Personal: Born Jacob Warren Schmitt … Son of Tonya and Brian Schmitt … Chose Northwestern over Michigan State … Intends to major in physical therapy at Northwestern.

He comes to us from an extremely strong high school program and his ability to dominate his opponents is contagious.  During the recruiting process, it quickly became obvious that Jacob embodies what we want at Northwestern. He is a hard worker who will push himself on the wrestling mats and in the classroom.”

    High School: 2012 Indiana State Champion … Member of the 2012 USA Cadet World Team where he placed 5th at the Cadet World Championships … 2012 FILA Cadet FS National Campion … 2012 USA Wrestling Triple Crown Winner … Four-time Fargo National Champion …Three-time Indiana State place winner, regional champion, sectional champion and conference champion … Two-time semi-state champion … Team captain and a three-time team MVP and letterwinner … Played a year of fullback for the Fisher football team … Junior Academic All-State and had the highest GPA on the Fisher wrestling team for three years.

    Personal: Born Mitchell Tyler Sliga … Son of Christopher and Michelle Sliga … Competed on the Indiana national teams with current NU wrestler Jason Tsirtsis … Chose Northwestern over Minnesota, Michigan and Cornell … Plans to major in economics at Northwestern.

    Pariano on Mitch Sliga: “Mitch is an outstanding young man and is a perfect fit to our program on many levels. He is a student of the sport--he lives it and embraces it. His numerous national titles demonstrate his ability to win on some of wrestling's biggest stages. Last summer he won the World Team Trials at 84 KG and represented the United States at the Cadet World Championships where he placed 5th in the world. We want guys who make world teams and want to win world medals and we are excited for Mitch to complete his senior season in high school as a multiple-time state champion.”
