EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern’s returning All-Americans Jason Welch (157) and Mike McMullan (285) will compete at the prestigious NWCA All-Star Classic this Saturday at 6:30 p.m. in Washington D.C. The annual exhibition begins at 6:30 p.m. at the sold-out Bender Arena on the campus of American University and features some of the top-ranked wrestlers in the country at every weight class.
Welch enters the season ranked No. 3 in the country at 157 lbs. by Amateur Wrestling news and will take on second-ranked Dylan Alton of Penn State. The NU senior met Alton, who also is a returning All-American, twice during the 2011-12 season and the two each won a match. Welch is poised for a strong senior campaign with the Wildcats after earning All-American status in 2011 for placing sixth at NCAA’s and again in 2012 with his fourth-place finish.
McMullan’s foe is Dom Bradley from Missouri. The NU sophomore begins the season ranked No. 4 while Bradley, who took an Olympic redshirt in 2011-12, is one spot behind him at No. 5. McMullan had a remarkable freshman campaign for the Wildcats, finishing third in the nation at heavyweight to become an All-American in 2012. Bradley also is an All-American, placing third in 2011.
