    Borschel Returns to Mat, Defeats MMA Competitor Simpson

    LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Northwestern assistant coach and former NCAA champion Jay Borschel returned to the mat on Sunday, Oct. 27 and earned a win at the first Agon Wrestling I: The Revolution wrestling event.

    Wrestling at the Rio Hotel in Las Vegas, Borschel opened the event by defeating Aaron Simpson 15-3. Simpson is a former All-American for Arizona State currently competing in MMA. 

    The event also featured former NCAA champions Ben Askren (Missouri), Stephen Abas (Fresno State) Kyle Dake (Cornell) Jordan Oliver (Oklahoma State) and Quentin Wright (Penn State).

    Agon bouts were nine minutes (three equal three-minute periods) instead of seven minutes in college.


     

     

    The Oct. 27 inaugural Agon Wrestling Championships event in Las Vegas is expected to be the first of seven similar around the country. The next Agon event will be in Flint, Mich., on Dec. 22. In 2014, there are more events planned in Ithaca, N.Y., Columbus, Ohio, Clovis, Calif., Indiana, Pa. and a return to Las Vegas next July.
