EVANSTON, Ill.-Northwestern associate head coach Tim Cysewski will be inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame’s Illinois Chapter in the Class of 2013.
The induction and honors banquet will take place on Sunday, October 20.
"Tim has given so much to the sport of wrestling throughout his career as an athlete, coach and mentor,” Northwestern head coach Drew Pariano said. “He will continue to do so because it's his passion. His ties to Illinois high school wrestling, Northwestern University, Iowa and the Ken Kraft Midlands is second to none.
“Anyone who has the good fortune of knowing Tim understands his love for the sport of wrestling and why he's been involved with it virtually his entire life."
For 20 years, Cysewski oversaw a Northwestern wrestling program that produced four individual NCAA champions, 27 All-Americans, 12 Big Ten champions and 88 qualifiers for the NCAA Championships. From 2005-09, Cysewski enjoyed what was undeniably his most successful stretch as head coach at NU, guiding the Wildcats to five consecutive top-15 national finishes as a team -- tying a program-best with its fourth-place NCAA showing in 2007 and 1990 -- and winning individual NCAA titles in 2007, 2008 and 2009, making Northwestern the only school in the country to have at least one national champion each of those successive seasons.
Following the 2009-10 campaign, Cysewski turned over the reins of the program to his former wrestler and associate head coach Drew Pariano. But Cysewski, who remains as passionate as ever about coaching and developing young wrestlers, remains on staff as an associate head coach for the Wildcats.
The winningest coach in school history with 155 dual victories to his credit, Cysewski was instrumental in recruiting, coaching and mentoring arguably the most decorated wrestler in NU history -- Hodge Trophy winner, two-time NCAA champion and U.S. Olympian, Jake Herbert -- during his six-year career at Northwestern and his foray into international wrestling.
In the 2013 National Wrestling Hall of Fame Class, Cysewski will be inducted for his Lifetime Service. He joins Don Devine (Lifetime Service), Werner Holzer (Lifetime Service), Leo Kocher (Lifetime Service), Cristian Migliarese (Lifetime Service), Ron Reichert (Lifetime Service), Ricky Robertson (Schutlz Award Winner), William Vail (Outstanding American) and Rex Whitlatch (Lifetime Service).
Cysewski will receive a plaque and jacket from the National Wrestling Hall of Fame of Stillwater, Oklahoma. His name will be engraved on a bar to be displayed at the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Museum in Stillwater.
