LONDON – Northwestern graduate Jake Herbert represented the United States in the 84 kg/185 lbs. freestyle wrestling competition at the 2012 Olympics Saturday in London. The two-time Wildcat NCAA Champion advanced to the repechage round and finished the tournament 1-2.

Herbert won his first match, defeating Cuba’s Humberto Arencibia. Despite losing the first period 4-1, he came back to dominate in the second, winning by technical fall. Herbert scored three two-point moves and a one-pointer in the second, winning 7-0 in 1:39. Knotted at 1-1, the match came down to the decisive third period. Arencibia tallied the first point and Herbert tied the score at 1-1 late in the stanza, winning the bout by virtue of scoring the last point.

In the quarterfinals, Herbert matched up against the defending World Champion, Sharif Sharifov of Azerbaijan. Sharifov advanced to the semifinals, winning 4-1, 6-0.

Herbert then had to wait for Sharifov’s semifinal match to see if the former Wildcat wrestler would have a chance to compete for bronze. Sharifov won his semifinal match, defeating Ehsan Naser Lashgari of Iran, and with the win, Herbert was back in the competition in the repechage round.

Herbert met Turkey’s Ibrahim Bolukbasi in the repechage and wrestled another close match. Bolukbasi took the first period, 1-0 and Herbert evened things up in the second, winning 4-1. The third period contained a flurry of scoring and Bolukbasi narrowly edged Herbert, 5-4 to advance to the bronze-medal match.

A two-time NCAA Champion at 184 lbs., Herbert was wrestling in his first Olympic games. The 2009 Northwestern graduate was a silver medalist at the 2009 World Championships, a 2009 Hodge Trophy recipient and the third Wildcat wrestler to compete for the United States at the Olympics.
