VIDEO: Tsirtsis opened up in second match

STILLWATER, Okla. - Northwestern redshirt freshman Jason Tsirtsis (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) won two matches at the 2013 ASICS U.S. Junior World Team Trials on Sunday to secure a spot on the U.S. Junior World Team.

The FILA Junior National Champion earned an automatic spot in the championship match at 66 kg/145.5 lbs., where he faced the 2012 Cadet World Champion, Zain Retherford. In the first match, Tsirtsis jumped out to a 6-0 first-period lead and added on two more points late in the second to take the 8-3 victory. The best-of-three series then ended in the second match as Tsirtsis dominated Retherford with an 8-0 first-period tech fall to punch his ticket to the 2013 FILA Junior World Championships.

Tsirtsis now has his sights set on a Junior World Title as he will represent the United States at the 2013 FILA Junior World Championships, Aug. 13-18, in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Tsirtsis redshirted the 2012-13 season and had an impressive first year, compiling an 18-3 record while wrestling unattached. He won three of the four tournaments he participated in and placed eighth in a highly-competitive Midlands field at 141 lbs. Prior to joining Northwestern, Tsirtsis was a four-time state champion at Crown Point High School, becoming just the eighth wrestler in Indiana state history to win four titles.
