2013 ASICS U.S. Junior World Team Trials Info
EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern’s Jason Tsirtsis (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) will be in Stillwater, Okla., this weekend, wrestling at the 2013 ASICS U.S. Junior World Team Trials. Tsirtsis will compete in the 66 kg. freestyle division with competition taking place Sunday, June 23, inside Gallager-Iba Arena on Oklahoma State’s campus.
Tsirtsis already has one title to his name this offseason as he won the 66 kg/145.5 lbs. freestyle division at the FILA Junior National Championships in April. He dominated his competition with five victories, including four by tech fall, and did not surrender a point all tournament.
By virtue of his FILA Junior National title, Tsirtsis will automatically wrestle in the 66 kg finals at the 2013 ASICS U.S. Junior World Team Trials. He will know his opponent following the challenge tournament, which runs from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. CT on Sunday, June 23. The finals for all Greco-Roman and freestyle matches are set to begin at 3 p.m. CT. The champions from each weight class will represent the United States at the 2013 FILA Junior World Championships, Aug. 13-18 in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Tsirtsis redshirted the 2012-13 season and had an impressive first year, compiling an 18-3 record while wrestling unattached. He won three of the four tournaments he participated in and placed eighth in a highly-competitive Midlands field at 141 lbs. Prior to joining Northwestern, Tsirtsis was a four-time state champion at Crown Point High School, becoming just the eighth wrestler in Indiana state history to win four titles.
A number of the top collegiate and post-graduate wrestlers will be in Stillwater, Okla., this weekend as the 2013 ASICS U.S. World Team Trials take place Friday and Saturday, prior to the Junior World Team Trials. Live scoring for all of the matches will be available via TrackWrestling.com and more information on the trials can be found here.
