EVANSTON, Ill. – All four members of Northwestern head coach Drew Pariano’s incoming No. 1 nationally ranked recruiting class capped off their high school careers with state championships this winter.
High school seniors Bryce Brill (Mt. Carmel, Ill.), Sammy Gross (Beachwood, Ohio), Stevan Micic (Hanover Central, Ind.) and Johnny Sebastian (Bergen Catholic, N.J.) all captured titles this season at their respective weight classes.
Micic (126 lbs.), Brill (152 lbs.) and Sebastian (182 lbs.), each of whom is ranked No. 1 nationally in his weight class this year, became three-time state champions this season. Gross (132 lbs.) earned his second state title in the last three years this winter in Ohio.
“All of our incoming recruits reached the pinnacle in their respective state tournaments,” Pariano said. “I speak for each of them when I say that they are hungry for additional success at national competitions. Eventually, they will reach their goal of becoming NCAA Champions, the very reason they chose to attend Northwestern.”
Micic of Hanover Central High School became a three-time Indiana state champion after winning 10-5 in the 126 lbs. title bout. He captured the 106 lbs. championship in 2012 as a sophomore and won a state title at 113 lbs. last season in his junior campaign.
Brill finished an undefeated senior season at Mount Carmel High School by prevailing 17-6 in the 152 lbs. championship match. The three-time Illinois champion won his first title as a freshman at Marmion Academy before earning a pair of crowns at Mount Carmel.
Bergen Catholic’s Sebastian won his third New Jersey state championship after recording a takedown in overtime to earn a 6-4 victory in the 182 lbs. final. The No. 1 ranked high school wrestler in his weight class, Sebastian finished his Crusaders career with a record of 143-18.
Beachwood (Ohio) High School’s Gross took home the 132 lbs. championship with a 5-1 decision in the final. A former teammate of current ‘Cats wrestler Jacob Berkowitz, Gross also stood atop the state podium as a sophomore and ranks second all time in wins for Beachwood.
The four incoming recruits will join the Wildcats for the 2014-15 season. This year, Northwestern placed five automatic qualifiers in the NCAA Championships set for Oklahoma City, Okla. from March 20-22. Reaching the national competition for the ‘Cats are 2014 Big Ten Champion Jason Tsirtsis (149 lbs.), Dominick Malone (133 lbs.), Pierce Harger (165 lbs.), Alex Polizzi (197 lbs.) and Mike McMullan (285 lbs.).
