McMullan Tabbed No. 1 Heavyweight, Earns Big Ten Wrestler of the Week Honors
After upending Iowa’s heavyweight Bobby Telford on Friday at Welsh-Ryan Arena, Northwestern heavyweight Mike McMullan has been named the Big Ten Wrestler of the Week, the conference announced today.
The win also propelled McMullan to the No. 1 ranking at heavyweight by Intermat and in the AWN Individual Ranks.
Before a season-high 1,832 fans at Welsh-Ryan Arena Friday, McMullan (8-1), ranked No. 3 at the time, recorded a 3-1 overtime win over Telford, the No. 1 ranked heavyweight last week, who fell to 16-2 on the season.
McMullan led Telford 1-0 going into the third period. With 1:15 left in the match, Telford tied it up with a quick escape to bring the match into the third over time of the night. McMullan took over in overtime with a quick take down, winning 3-1 after eight and a half minutes of tough wrestling.
It was McMullan’s second win over the season over a no. 1 ranked opponent after he defeated Tony Nelson of Minnesota on Jan. 10. That win earned McMullan Co-Wrestler of the Week honors, and this is his first and the team’s first outright B1G weekly honor of the season.
