    2012-13 Northwestern Wrestling Season Stats Get Acrobat Reader

    The Weekend
    Northwestern takes a break from a grueling Big Ten schedule on Friday and travels west to DeKalb, Ill. for a nonconference matchup with Northern Illinois, starting at 7 p.m. The Wildcats have been successful out of conference this season, posting a 5-2 record. These teams met last year in Evanston with NU coming out on top, 24-18. The ‘Cats last wrestled in DeKalb during the 2009-10 campaign.
     
    The Wildcats then return home for the final time this season for a Big Ten contest against rival Illinois at 7 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 10. The last time Illinois came to Welsh-Ryan, in 2010-11, NU earned a decisive 27-13 decision.
     
    Sunday also is Senior Day at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Be sure to arrive early as the Northwestern wrestling team honors seniors Paul Jackson, Levi Mele, Marcus Shrewsbury and Jason Welch for their contributions to the program.
     
    Last Time Out
    Last Friday, the ‘Cats fell to No. 18 Purdue at home in a close dual, 21-15. No. 2 Jason Welch (157) and No. 9 Lee Munster (174) picked up bonus points for Northwestern with a technical fall and a major decision, respectively. No. 9 Mike McMullan competed in his first match since the Midlands Championships, defeating Alex White 9-2 at heavyweight.
     
    The dual came down to the last match between No. 15 Camden Eppert of Purdue and No. 19 Dominick Malone for Northwestern at 125 lbs. Eppert was able to best Malone in a 10-0 major decision to secure the dual for Purdue.
     
    Six Away…
    Jason Welch is moving closer to a spot on the all-time wins list at Northwestern. Tony Pariano (1992-96) is currently ninth with 110 wins and Welch sits at 104 career victories heading into the weekend. He has a 22-1 record this season. Here is the list for all-time victories:

    Scouting Northern Illinois
    The Huskies recently came off of a tough double header against Eastern Michigan and No. 7 Missouri. The team went 0-2 on the weekend, losing to Eastern Michigan 22-17 and to Missouri 39-3. Kevin Fanta had the only win against Missouri, defeating Nicholas Hucke at 141 lbs. Northern Illinois is 7-7 on the season and 0-5 in the MAC.
     
    Scouting No. 8 Illinois
    The Fighting Illini were recently shut out by then-No. 1 Penn State 37-0 but still comes into Sunday’s dual ranked No. 8 in the coaches’ poll. The team has eight wrestlers ranked in the first NCAA Coaches’ Panel Rankings including: No. 4 Jesse Delgado at 125 lbs., No. 11 Daryl Thomas at 133 lbs., No. 3 B.J. Futrell at 141 lbs., No. 24 Caleb Ervin at 149 lbs., No. 8 Conrad Polz at 165 lbs., No. 8 Jordan Blanton at 174 lbs., No. 15 Tony Dallago at 184 lbs. and No. 15 Mario Gonzalez at 197 lbs. Illinois is 6-4 on the season and 2-4 in the Big Ten.
     
    Up Next
    After finishing up the home portion of its Big Ten schedule, Northwestern will again take a nonconference break with a trip to Brookings, S.D., to meet South Dakota State in a dual meet on Sunday, Feb. 17 at 1 p.m. CT.
     
    The Big Ten regular season wraps up with a meet at Indiana. The dual will be held in Bloomington, Ind. on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 1 p.m. CT., which is NU’s final test before the 2013 Big Ten Championships, March 9-10.
