'Cats in Ninth Place in Team Standings

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern 134-pounder Scott Schatzman and 190-pounder Sam Neider both advanced to the semifinals of the 1997 Midlands Wrestling Championships in Welsh-Ryan Arena on Monday. Schatzman, the No. 2 seed at 134 pounds, will face third-seeded Jeremy Ensrud of Oregon. Neider, seeded third at 190 pounds, will face second-seeded and defending Midlands champion Jason Robison of Edinboro in his semifinal matchup. Both will try to become Northwestern's first Midlands champion since Andre Allen in 1974.

NU 150-pounder Drew Pariano also will finish among the top eight at this year's Midlands. Pariano, the seventh seed at 150 pounds, is 3-1 thus far in the tournament. Wildcat sophomore 190-pounder Joel Goeden battled all the way through the consolation bracket, wrestling a total of six matches on Monday. However, Goeden fell one match short of finishing among the top eight placewinners at 190 pounds. The 'Cats stand in ninth place after day one of the tournament with 40.00 team points, just one-half point behind North Carolina for eighth place. Iowa leads the team standings at 69.00, with Illinois (63.50) and Oregon (61.50) close behind.

The tournament's third session begins at noon CST on Tuesday, with the finals beginning at 7 p.m. in Welsh-Ryan Arena.
