Northwestern Wrestlers Beat Kent State, Fall to Clarion and Lock Haven

EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Northwestern wrestling team travelled to Clarion University Sunday for a trio of dual meets and came away with a 1-2 record.

In the first round, NU squared off against Kent State and came away with a commanding 27-15 win. The 'Cats won all but three weight classes, two of which they forfeited. Scott Schatzman, 134 pounds, Malik Elliott, 142 pounds, and Sam Neider, 190 pounds, each won by major decision and Steve Bucciero pinned his man at 4:30. Also winning for NU was Dominic Caruso, Micah Hey and Drew Pariano.

NU took on Lock Haven in the second round and fell, 25-15. Caruso, at 118 pounds, Schatzman and Pariano, at 150, each picked up wins to give NU a one-point lead midway through the match. Two decisions and a disqualification, though, gave Lock Haven enough to pull out the win. Sam Neider picked up his second pin of the season in the loss.

Against Clarion in the third round, NU lost a close 20-18 match. Caruso started things off with his third win of the day, 6-5. Northwestern fell behind, 14-6, and despite a late charge, including Joel Goeden's first pin of the year at 177 pounds, lost by two.

Northwestern returns home to host the 35th annual Midlands Tournament on Dec. 29-30 in Welsh-Ryan Arena.
