No. 1 seeded Jason Welch continued his tear through the 157 lbs. weight class Sunday afternoon, advancing to the championship match Sunday night where he will face No. 3 Joey Napoli of Lehigh. Welch wrestled his semifinal match against Issac Jordan, who was wrestling unattached for Wisconsin, and won 9-3. He jumped out to a 7-0 advantage before the end of the second period and came incredibly close to pinning Jordan, but time ran out in the period.

Northwestern’s heavyweight, No. 2 seeded Mike McMullan, was poised for a trip to the finals of the 285 lbs. weight class before suffering an injury. McMullan was wrestling No. 3 Zac Thomusseit of Pittsburgh in a semifinal and the match ended in the first period after an injury for McMullan.

Third-seeded Lee Munster battled Robert Kokesh, the tournament’s second seed, from Nebraska in the 174 lbs. semifinals. Munster suffered the 10-2 setback and is now competing for fifth place. Munster takes on No. 4 Dan Yates of Michigan tonight.

Sophomore and No. 12 seed Alex Polizi completed his first Midlands Championships with a spot on the podium, placing eighth at 197 lbs.

NU’s 125-pounder, Dominick Malone, the tournament’s ninth seed, opened the afternoon session against No. 10 Joe Roth of Central Michigan. Roth came away with a hard fought 5-3 victory, effectively ending the tournament for Malone just shy of a chance at the podium.

Wrestling unattached from the ’Cats at 141 lbs., No. 8 Jason Tsirtsis entered Sunday needing just one win to secure a spot on the podium. He began the day by wrestling No. 7 Zach Neibert of Virginia Tech and winning 5-3. Tsirtsis then moved on to face fifth-seeded Evan Henderson (North Carolina) and lost a grueling match, 6-3. The freshman found a spot on the podium, placing eighth, after dropping a 7-1 decision against Joey Lazor of Northern Iowa.
