    EVANSTON, Ill. -- Three Northwestern wrestlers are into the semifinals at the Wildcats are currently in fourth place with 49.0 points after day one of the 50th Ken Kraft Midlands Championships at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Senior Jason Welch (157), sophomore Lee Munster (174) and sophomore Mike McMullan (285) will all compete in the semifinals during Sunday’s Session III.

    Welch, the top seed at 157 lbs. and returning Midlands Champion, faces unseeded Isaac Jordan, who is wrestling unattached from Wisconsin. Fellow returning champion, third-seeded Munster, takes on the No. 2 seed, Robert Kokesh of Nebraska. Second-seeded McMullan will wrestle against No. 3 seed Zac Thomusselt of Pittsburgh in the semifinals. All three Wildcats are guaranteed to place in the top eight in their respective weight classes.

    Two other Northwestern starters are still alive in the consolation round, including freshman Dominick Malone (125) and sophomore Alex Polizzi (197). Freshman Jason Tsirtsis is competing unattached and advanced all the way to the semifinals at 141 lbs. before falling in a narrow 7-5 decision against defending Midlands Champion, Kendric Maple of Oklahoma. Tsirtsis wrestles his first consolation match tomorrow morning against No. 7 Zach Neibert from Virginia Tech.

    No. 9 Malone will face No. 10 seed Joe Roth of Central Michigan Sunday morning. No. 12 Polizzi dropped his first match of the day but bounced back nicely after dropping, winning three straight in the consolation round. He now takes on eighth-seeded Max Huntley from Michigan.

    Day two of the 50th Ken Kraft Midlands Championships begins tomorrow at noon CT with consolation rounds, semifinals and seventh-place matches. The fourth and final session begins at 7 p.m. with first, third and fifth-place bouts but be sure to arrive at 6:30 to see the Parade of Champions! If you can’t make it to Welsh-Ryan Arena, tune into the Big Ten Network to watch the finals live at 7 p.m.
