Herbert Wins Individual Midlands Championship at 174 lbs. First NU undergraduate wrestler to win Midlands title since 1974

Jake Herbert became the first NU undergraduate to win an individual Midlands title in 30 years with his victory Thursday evening.

EVANSTON, Ill. - Redshirt freshman Jake Herbert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) captured the Midlands Championship at 174 lbs. Thursday evening by defeating No. 5 seed Mitch Hancock of Central Michigan. The championship victory is the first by an NU undergraduate since Andre Allen won the 142 lb. title in 1974.

The victory was the third-consecutive upset for Herbert, seeded No. 7. He dropped No. 2 Pete Friedl of Illinois in the quarterfinal before defeating No. 6 Nick Passolano of Iowa State in the semifinals, 5-2.

Illinois successfully defended its title from a year ago in the overall team competition, winning with 130.5 total points. Northwestern finished in seventh place with 64.5 points.

Mike Tamillow (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) also competed in session four of the tournament, finishing with a sixth-place finish at 184 lbs. He fell to Ed Magyrs of Eastern Michigan in a close fifth-place match.
