EDINBORO, Pa. – No. 10 Northwestern went 1-1 Sunday at the McComb Fieldhouse in Edinboro, Pa., defeating Clarion 26-9 but fell to the host team, No. 20 Edinboro, 22-15. In total, the Wildcats won 12 bouts on the afternoon as No. 15 Dominick Malone (125), No. 2 Jason Welch (157), No. 12 Pierce Harger (165), No. 8 Lee Munster (174) and No. 7 Mike McMullan (Hwt.) all went 2-0 on the day.

Freshman Dominick Malone got things started with a victory for Northwestern against Clarion at 125 and needed extra time to secure the 4-3 win. Malone, who is currently ranked No. 15 at 125 lbs., was tied 2-2 with Clarion’s Tyler Fraley after regulation. Neither wrestler scored in the sudden victory period and each wrestler traded escapes in the first tiebreaker, putting the score at 3-3. Malone then went up 4-3 with an escape in the second tiebreaker and kept Fraley down to put three team points on the board for the Wildcats.

No. 9 Levi Mele extended the NU lead to 6-0 with a 10-3 decision over Joe Waltko at 133 lbs. Clarion kept things close, winning at 141 and 149, tying the score at 6-6 heading into the marquee match at 157 lbs.

With two All-Americans squaring off at 157, it was second-ranked Jason Welch dominating No. 3 James Fleming in a 10-1 major decision. Welch jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first period with a takedown and three nearfall points. He then added another second-period takedown to go up 7-0, and scored a reversal in the third. Fleming’s lone point of the match came off an escape as Welch had 3:03 of riding time to finish with the 10-1 victory.

Welch’s win marked a string of three straight bonus point victories for the Wildcats as sophomore and No. 12 Pierce Harger kept things rolling with another major decision at 165 lbs. Harger defeated Nick Milano, 13-3, giving NU the 14-6 lead.

No. 8 Lee Munster had another dominating victory for the Wildcats, scoring a second period tech fall over Ryan Darch. Munster had the 11-0 lead after the first period and finished off the tech fall in 3:28 to put NU up 19-6.

Clarion scored its final victory of the match at 184 and the Wildcats closed out the first dual with wins at 197 and heavyweight. No. 17 Alex Polizzi came from behind against Justin Ortega in the 9-7 victory at 197 lbs. Ortega had the 5-1 lead after the first period and 7-3 edge after two. Polizzi started the third period down, scored an escape and then came within one (7-6) scoring a takedown. The NU sophomore then secured the victory with three nearfall points to win 9-7 and give NU the 22-9 lead.

No. 7 Mike McMullan recorded the third major decision of the match at heavyweight with the 12-0 shutout of Phil Catrucco. McMullan had the 6-0 lead after the first and 9-0 lead after two. He added a third-period takedown and 3:18 of riding time, putting the final score at 26-9 in favor of Northwestern.

Northwestern and Edinboro each won five bouts in the second dual of the day but it was bonus points that proved to be the difference in the 22-15 victory for the Fighting Scots. Malone gave NU a 3-0 lead with his 3-0 shutout of Kory Mines, but Edinboro won the next three matches at 133, 141 and 149 to take the 10-3 lead.

Welch put NU within four points, defeating Casey Fuller, 9-4, and Harger's close 5-3 decision over No. 13 Johnny Greisheimer found NU within one (10-9). Munster then put Northwestern on top 12-10 with another decision, 6-2, over Patrick Jennings, but that would be the final lead of the afternoon for the Wildcats.

Edinboro took control of the match with two pins at 184 and 197, including one late in the third period at 197 (6:46). McMullan ended things on a positive note for the Wildcats though, defeating Edinboro’s No. 15 Ernest James, 3-2.
