Dec. 4, 2008
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Trailing by three heading into the last four matches, No. 17 Northwestern got critical pins by second-ranked Jake Herbert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) and heavyweight Paul Rands (Cary, Ill./Cary), along with decisions by Robert Kellogg (Sioux City, Iowa/Sioux City North) and John Schoen (Roselle, Ill./Marist) down the stretch to down Northern Illinois at Welsh-Ryan Arena, 27-12.
Kellogg recorded a narrow 5-4 victory against Derrick Yant in the 174-pound division that effectively turned the tide of a close match for Northwestern. Herbert followed with his sixth fall of the year -- a pin of NIU's Justin Carlson in 1:20 -- to improve to 10-0 in his senior campaign.
Herbert now has 125 career wins, good for third all-time in Northwestern history.
At 197, Schoen capitalized on Northwestern's seizing of momentum, earning a hard-fought 5-3 decision over Brad Dieckhaus. Schoen held a 2-1 lead after the first period but Dieckhaus managed to tie the score in the second. In the decisive period, Schoen scored another takedown and earned a riding time point to capture the match for the Wildcats.
Early in the match, junior All-American and third-ranked Brandon Precin (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) continued his dominance in 2008 with an 11-4 decision over Izzy Montemayor at 125. After Robert Joyce (Arlington Heights, Ill./St. Viator) was pinned by NIU's Trent DeShazer at 133, No. 8 Keith Sulzer (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Edward) squared off against the Huskies' Vince Castillo. Sulzer jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period with a takedown before going up 3-0 on an escape in the second frame. Castillo earned a late takedown in the third period to make it a 3-2 match, but Sulzer held on in a critical win for Northwestern.
Freshman Jason Welch (Walnut Creek, Calif./Las Lomas) wrestled in his first match since returning from an illness and posted a 5-0 win against Northern Illinois' Bryan Deutsch, who entered the night with a 6-1 record. Welch is now 8-1 this year.
Rands finished off the match for the 'Cats with an impressive fall against Zak Saevre in just 1:22.
Northwestern (5-1) is now off until it travels to Pittsburgh on Dec. 19.
Over 500 fans attended High School Night on Thursday. At the intermission, 2008 NCAA champion Dustin Fox was presented his NCAA and Big Ten championship rings.
