EVANSTON, Ill. - No. 20 Northwestern opened its 2013-14 season in dominating fashion, shutting out the University of Chicago, 38-0 and taking down Stevens Tech, 38-6. NU won 14 total matches with bonus points, including nine major decisions, two tech falls and three pins.
began the day at 125 lbs. defeating Chicago's Gabe Martinez with a 17-1 tech fall.
NU recorded back-to-back major decisions at 133 lbs. and 141 lbs. First, Dominick Malone defeated Chicago's Alex Moore 13-2 and Pat Greco followed that up with a win over Charles Banasak.
Redshirt freshman Jason Tsirtsis recorded his first collegiate win, defeating Chicago's Jacob Smith 18-2 by tech fall at 149 lbs.
Kevin Bialka followed it up for the Wildcats with a 13-3 major decision victory against Chicago's Michael McNulty.
Getting another bonus points win for the `Cats, Pierce Harger pinned Steven Franke at 6:47 at 174 lbs.
Wrestling at 285 lbs., NU's Alex Polizzi closed out the first meet with a 11-3 major decision against Jeffrey Tyburski (Chi.).
After a brief intermission, NU squared off against Stevens Tech and White started things off again for Northwestern at 125 pounds with a major decision against Rob Murray.
At 133 lbs., Malone pinned Steven Tech's Ryan Wilson at 3:28. Including White's victory, the `Cats would win four of the first five bouts against Stevens Tech thanks to major decisions.
Harger defeated Kalen Gans by a major decision 10-1 at 174 lbs. and Polizzi recorded NU's final victory on the day. After being in the 285 class against Chicago, Polizzi pinned Stevens Tech's Alex Moreno at 3:57 wrestling at 197 lbs.
The only events Northwestern didn't win on the day was a double forfeit at 184 lbs. against Chicago and a forfeit at 285 lbs. against Steven Tech. Heavyweight Mike McMullan's spot was open as the two-time All American was competing at the NWCA All-Star Classic.
The `Cats return to the mat with a dual meet against Air Force (7:00 p.m. CT) and Northern Colorado (9:00 p.m.) at Denver Colo., on Friday, Nov. 8. NU returns home to Welsh-Ryan Arena to face SIUE on Dec. 15 at 1:00 p.m. CT.
