EVANSTON, Ill. - It all came down to the final match Friday night in Northwestern's Big Ten dual vs. No. 18 Purdue. With NU trailing 17-15, the Boilermakers captured the final victory of the evening to take the 21-15 win. Northwestern picked up four wins, including two with key bonus points, as Jason Welch (157), Pierce Harger (165), Lee Munster (174) and Mike McMullan (Hwt.) were all victorious.
Friday's bout started at 133 lbs. and true freshman Garrison White took on No. 14 Cashe Quiroga in a tightly-contested match. Quiroga went ahead 4-2 after the first period but White came within one at 4-3 after two periods, scoring an escape in the second. Quiroga went back up by two (5-3) and White then tied things up at 5-5 with just over a minute remaining, scoring a takedown. Quiroga escaped shortly after with 53 seconds left to secure the 6-5 victory.
Purdue then won the next two bouts with a decision at 141 and a major decision at 149 to take the 10-0 lead.
The Wildcats cut the deficit before the break winning the next two at 157 and 165. Senior Jason Welch put up some bonus points for NU with the 20-4 technical fall at 157 lbs. over Tommy Churchard. Needing a takedown in the closing seconds to secure the five team points, Welch converted with just four seconds left at the edge of the mat and tacked on 3:21 of riding time in the win.
Sophomore Pierce Harger then kept things rolling at 165 lbs., recording the 6-3 decision over Pat Robinson to put the team score at 10-8 going into the break. Harger had the 2-1 lead after one but Robinson scored a second-period escape to even things up at 2-2. Harger, who is ranked No. 14 in the country, secured the victory in the third scoring a quick escape, takedown and had 2:01 of riding time.
Sophomore Lee Munster then put NU on top with some more bonus points at 174 lbs. Ninth-ranked Munster recorded the 10-2 major decision over Chad Welch, giving NU the 12-10 lead with four bouts remaining. Munster had the 5-0 lead after two and recorded two more takedowns in the third and tacked on 3:16 of riding time in the win.
Purdue went back ahead in the team score, 14-12, with a major decision at 184 and extended its lead to 17-12 with another narrow decision at 197. Alex Polizzi dropped a close 5-4 match to Purdue's No. 18 Braden Atwood, who scored the winning takedown with 26 seconds remaining.
NU once again came close as Mike McMullan made his return to the lineup and captured the 9-2 decision over Alex White at heavyweight. McMullan was wrestling in his first match since Midlands and recorded his 12th win of the year which put the team score at 17-15 in favor of the Boilermakers.
The match came down to the final bout of the evening at 125 lbs. and Purdue hung on for the 21-15 dual victory with the major decision.
The Wildcats are back in action next Friday and stay in-state, taking on nonconference foe Northern Illinois. Match time is set for 7 p.m. in DeKalb, Ill.
