CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- In its third dual of the day, 13th-ranked Northwestern lost a tight match with No. 18 Arizona State in its second-round consolation match Saturday at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals. Will Durkee (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) and Jake Herbert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) recorded back-to-back wins to bring Northwestern within two, but Arizona State took the match, 22-17.
At 125 lbs., No. 8 John Velez (Kings Mills, Ohio/Kings) wrestled the Sun Devils' sixth-ranked Jeremy Mendoza. After the first two periods went by without a score, Mendoza earned an escape and a takedown late in the third period to take the match 3-0.
Daniel Quintela (St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park) faced Arizona State's John Espinoza at 133 lbs. Espinoza scored an early takedown to take a 2-0 lead, but Quintela scored on an escape late in the first period. Trailing 2-1 entering the second period, Quintela tallied another escape to tie the score at 2-2. He then recorded a takedown with 25 seconds remaining in the match to take a 4-2 lead. Quintela outlasted Espinoza for the remainder of the match and tied the team score at 3-3 with the win.
At 141 lbs., Marty Gould (Lincolnwood, Ill./Niles West) faced ASU's Jason Robbins. Robbins lit up the board first with a takedown, but Gould responded with a takedown of his own to tie the score at 2-2. After a Robbins escape, Gould trailed 3-2 entering the second period. With 1:43 left in the second round, Gould recorded an escape to tie the score at 3-3.
Gould and Robbins traded escapes with under 10 seconds remaining in the match and went into overtime tied at 4-4.
After a scramble by both wrestlers, Robbins notched a takedown with less than 15 seconds left to get the win.
With the 'Cats trailing 6-3, Jimmy Kim (East Peoria, Ill./East Peoria Community) took the mat for Northwestern at 149 lbs., and faced the Sun Devils' Pat Payne. Payne recorded a takedown and two three-point nearfalls in the first period to secure an 8-0 lead heading into the second round. While Kim scored on an escape in the second period and a takedown in the third, Payne went on to a 12-3 win.
With Northwestern trailing 10-3, Greg Hagel (Linwood, N.J./Blaire Academy) took on the Sun Devils' seventh-ranked Brian Stith at 157 lbs. Stith struck first with a takedown early in the first period, but Hagel responded with an escape to make the score 2-1. Stith extended his lead to 3-1 on an escape early in the second period, then made it 7-1 with two takedowns midway through the second round.
Hagel tallied a takedown of his own with 25 seconds remaining in the second period and trailed 7-3 to start the final round. Hagel began the third period with a frantic escape to make the score 7-4, but Stith scored on a takedown with 26 seconds remaining to take the match 10-4 with riding time.
At 165 lbs., 19th-ranked Durkee faced ASU's 11th-ranked Pat Pitsch. Following a scoreless first period, Durkee began the second period down and tallied an escape to take a 1-0 lead. Durkee started the third period in the up position but surrendered an escape to Pitsch. The two went scoreless the rest of the way and went into overtime tied at 1-1. There, the two wrestled to a scoreless first-overtime session. Durkee tallied an escape in the second tiebreaker of the second overtime to record a thrilling 2-1 victory.
With Northwestern trailing 13-6, the second-ranked Herbert took the mat against ASU's Jaime Robbins and immediately went to work, recording two takedowns less than one minute into the match. After a Robbins escape, Herbert recorded another takedown to make the score 6-1. After a series of Herbert takedowns and Robbins escapes to end the first round, Herbert started the second period with an escape and a takedown to take a 13-3 lead.
While Robbins scored another escape, it was clear that Herbert controlled the match. The All-American then recorded two takedowns and a three-point nearfall to earn the technical fall at 4:53, 21-5. With the win, Herbert is now 20-0 this season, and has won 26-straight matches dating back to last year.
Mike Tamillow (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) took the mat next with the 'Cats down 13-11. Arizona State's C.B. Dolloway took an early lead on Tamillow after a takedown, but Tamillow recorded an escape with 42 seconds left in the first period to make the score 2-1. Just at the end of the first period, however, Dolloway scored on a takedown and recorded a pin at 2:59 to give Arizona State a 19-11 lead with two weight classes remaining.
At 197 lbs., Matt Delguyd (Mayfield Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) faced Arizona State's Ryan Bader. Bader scored a takedown early in the first period and held a 2-0 lead a heading into the second round. After a scoreless second period, Bader made the score 6-1 with an escape and a takedown in the final round along with riding time.
The Sun Devil's forfeited at 285 lbs., giving Dustin Fox (Galion, Ohio/Galion) his 18th win of the season.
The damage was already done, however, and the Sun Devils took the match, 22-17.
"I felt like we had a good match," head coach Tim Cysewski said. "There were just a few key matches we needed to win and we didn't win them. Those matches were the key for us."
With the loss, Northwestern falls to 5-2 on the season.
The Wildcats return to action at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20 at No. 2 Minnesota.
