Daniel Quintela (St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park) faced Arizona State's John Espinoza at 133 lbs. Espinoza scored an early takedown to take a 2-0 lead, but Quintela scored on an escape late in the first period. Trailing 2-1 entering the second period, Quintela tallied another escape to tie the score at 2-2. He then recorded a takedown with 25 seconds remaining in the match to take a 4-2 lead. Quintela outlasted Espinoza for the remainder of the match and tied the team score at 3-3 with the win.

With Northwestern trailing 13-6, the second-ranked Herbert took the mat against ASU's Jaime Robbins and immediately went to work, recording two takedowns less than one minute into the match. After a series of Herbert takedowns and Robbins escapes to end the first round, Herbert started the second period with an escape and a takedown to take a 13-3 lead.

While Robbins scored another escape, it was clear that Herbert controlled the match. The All-American then recorded two takedowns and a three-point nearfall to earn the technical fall at 4:53, 21-5. The damage was already done, however, and the Sun Devils took the match, 22-17.

"I felt like we had a good match," head coach Tim Cysewski said. "There were just a few key matches we needed to win and we didn't win them. Those matches were the key for us."
