Northwestern got on the board thanks to a 6-1 victory by Alex Polizzi over Caleb Kolb at 197. Polizzi took the 2-0 lead after the first and had the 5-0 advantage after two periods. Kolb's lone point of the match came off an escape in the second as Polizzi racked up 4:01 of riding time in the victory. Polizzi improves to 12-8 on the season.
Trailing 9-3, NU was without starting heavyweight, eighth-ranked Mike McMullan, and true freshman Jacob Berkowitz, made his first career start. Berkowitz took on Nebraska's Spencer Johnson and kept the bout close but could not capture his first career victory as Johnson won, 6-0.
Malone picked up another win for the Wildcats, defeating Nebraska's Eric Coufal, 6-2. He scored a takedown in each of the first two periods, had 3:02 of riding time and only gave up a pair of escapes in the win. Malone is now 12-5 in his first season at NU.
After the break, Nebraska extended its lead, winning the next four bouts to go ahead 25-6. Sophomore Pat Greco was edged in a narrow 4-3 decision by Ridge Kiley at 141 lbs. and it was another one-point bout at 157 lbs. featuring two top-10 wrestlers. NU's second-ranked Jason Welch faced Nebraska's No. 7 James Green and despite a 6-1 first-period deficit, Welch made things interesting at the end. Green had the 6-3 lead heading into the third period and Welch scored two takedowns to come within one point (8-7) with 18 seconds left. Welch let Green escape, to go up 9-7 and Green was hit with his second stalling call, but Welch was unable to record the winning takedown as Green hung on for the 9-8 win. Welch is still an impressive 17-1 on the season and remains one win away from career victory No. 100.
Harger ended things on a positive note for Northwestern, pinning Austin Wilson in 1:56. Wilson had the quick 4-0 lead off a takedown and two nearfall points but Harger responded with an escape and takedown before recording the fall.
Northwestern takes a break from Big Ten action and wrestles two nonconference foes next Sunday, Jan. 20. The 'Cats travel to Edwardsville, Ill., to face Northern Iowa at 2 p.m. and then the host team, SIUE, at 4 p.m.
