EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 15 Northwestern returned to Big Ten dual action Sunday at Welsh-Ryan Arena and the Wildcats were unable to overcome fourth-ranked Ohio State as the Buckeyes took the 33-6 victory. Senior Jason Welch, who is ranked No. 2 in the country at 157 lbs., captured career victory No. 99 while and 12th-ranked Pierce Harger picked up a shutout victory at 165 lbs.
Ohio State won the first four weight classes of the afternoon but three of those were close decisions. At 125 lbs., No. 14 Dominick Malone faced All-American Nikko Triggas and the 16th-ranked Buckeye recorded the fall just before the first period expired.
True freshman Garrison White made his first career start and wrestled OSU’s Kyle Visconti at 133 lbs. Visconti scored the first takedown and White tied things up shortly after with a reversal. Visconti added a pair of escapes and had the 4-2 lead heading into the third period. White scored three points in the third period off two escapes and a point for locked hands against Visconi and trailed by just one, 6-5, with 18 seconds remaining. White was unable to score a takedown and Visconi hung on for the narrow 6-5 decision.
Sophomore Pat Greco took on the second-ranked wrestler in the country at 141 lbs., OSU’s Hunter Stieber, and surrendered a 10-5 decision. OSU also won another close decision at 149 as No. 14 Cam Tessari defeated NU’s Dylan Marriott, 8-3.
Two-time All-American Jason Welch picked up victory No. 99 with a 4-1 decision over No. 16 Josh Demas. Welch scored the first takedown of the match and had the 3-0 cushion after two periods. The NU senior was whistled for stalling twice in the third period and added 2:07 of riding time for the 4-1 win to improve to 17-0 on the season.
No. 12 Pierce Harger kept things rolling for NU with the 5-0 shutout of Mark Martin. He scored two takedowns, one in each period, and had 2:40 of riding time in the victory. Harger is now 14-3 on the season.
No. 8 Lee Munster nearly pulled off the upset of No. 2 Nick Heflin at 174 lbs., forcing overtime. Each wrestler scored an escape during regulation and after a scoreless sudden victory, the bout went to the tiebreaker. Heflin started down and escaped eight seconds into the period to lead 2-1. Munster fought until the final whistle but was unable to escape as Heflin hung on for the 2-1 win.
The Buckeyes then secured the victory with wins at 184 and 197 and NU forfeited the heavyweight bout.
