    1996-97 Season Recap

    Despite a less-than-perfect record, the 1996-97 season was in many ways a success for the Northwestern Wrestling team. NU posted a 6-9 mark, 2-7 in the Big Ten last year, but managed a tie for 15th at the Midlands The 'Cats also had five wrestlers qualify for the NCAA Championships, where they posted a respectable 35th place finish. Junior Sam Neider led the way at 190 pounds last season. He posted a 26-12 overall record with a 9-4 mark in dual meet action. He also led the squad with nine falls and was a placewinner in four meets. Senior Will Reisman had an 18-13 overall record and a 9-6 dual mark. Freshmen Joel Goeden and Malik Elliott were pleasant surprises at 177 and 134 pounds respectively. Goeden went 19-17 overall and 7-8 in dual meets with two falls, while Elliott was 16-17 with a 6-8 dual record. Junior heavyweight Rob Chicoine added depth with an impressive 14-9 overall mark, 4-4 in dual meets.
