Arvid Swan Named Head Men's Tennis Coach
Aug. 6, 2007 EVANSTON, Ill.--- Arvid Swan, former head men's tennis coach at DePaul University, has been named Northwestern University's head men's tennis coach, announced today by Mark Murphy, athletics director. While at DePaul, Swan improved the team immensely in the one year he served as head coach. On the heels of an 8-14 season, Swan's Blue Demons finished the 2006-07 season with an 18-7 record and reached a ranking as high as No. 58 in the nation. Additionally, the team was ranked in the top-75 for eight ranking periods and in the top-60 for the first time since last decade, despite playing only five home matches. Although he was at DePaul for just one year, the impact Swan had on the program will far outlast his stay as The Tennis Recruiting Network ranks his first and only recruiting class No. 36 in the nation. Prior to taking the position as head coach at DePaul, Swan served as associate head coach at NU from 2003-06. While at NU, Swan helped take the program to new heights as the Wildcats jumped from finishing sixth in the Big Ten before his arrival to back-to-back fourth-place conference finishes. He also helped lead the team to a top-40 national ranking twice. In 2004 and 2005, the 'Cats reached the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament and made an appearance in the 2006 NCAA Tournament. In his playing days, Swan was a world-ranked professional singles and doubles player before moving into coaching.
"I want to thank Mr. Murphy, Mr. (John) Mack and the NU athletic department for giving me the opportunity to come back to Evanston and coach the men's tennis team," Swan said. "It's a great opportunity for me and my family and I look forward to beginning a successful tenure with the Wildcats."
