EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern assistant men's tennis coach Chris Klingemann has been honored as the ITA Midwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year.

"Chris is very deserving of this award," Northwestern head coach Arvid Swan said. "I feel strongly that Chris is the best assistant coach in Division 1 tennis. He has an unbelievable work ethic and he has made a tremendous impact in player development, match strategy and recruiting. The players on the team really appreciate Chris' significant contributions to the program and I feel fortunate to work with him on a daily basis."

In his second year on the Wildcats' staff, Klingemann helped NU to a 22-10 record, including a 6-5 mark in the always-competitive Big Ten Conference.

Northwestern notched a hard-fought 4-3 win over Wake Forest in the opening round of the NCAA tournament. It was the program's first NCAA tourney win since 1998. The 'Cats eventually fell to third-seeded Georgia in the second round.

In Klingemann's two seasons on the staff, NU has gone from 11 victories in 2011 to 15 a year ago before this year's 22-win output. The team peaked at No. 18 in this season's ITA team rankings.
