    Wildcats Set for NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships

    EVANSTON, Ill. - A total of four Northwestern tennis student-athletes are representing the school at the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships in Athens, Ga., this week.

    On the women's side, seniors Veronica Corning and Belinda Niu are competing for the singles championship, while Corning is teaming with sophomore Alicia Barnett to participate in the doubles championship as well.

    Singles play gets underway Wednesday with the round of 64 and runs through the championship match on May 26. Doubles competition begins with the round of 32 Thursday with the title match also slated for May 26.

    Corning is No. 43 in singles in the most recent ITA rankings released May 1. Competing out of the No. 1 spot in the Wildcats' lineup this season, Corning has a 15-11 dual meet record and a 24-14 overall mark. She has eight victories over ranked players this year, including a win over then-No. 9 Emina Bektas of Michigan on April 5. Corning's first singles match is scheduled for 8 a.m. Central time Wednesday against 32nd-ranked Danielle Collins of Virginia.

    Niu sports a No. 35 ITA singles ranking and has a 20-3 dual record and 29-6 overall mark. She has played at No. 2 in the Wildcats' lineup and has six ranked wins this season. Her most impressive victory came April 27 when she rallied from down 5-2 in the third set to defeat 22nd-ranked Ronit Yurovsky of Michigan in the decisive match of the Big Ten tournament, giving Northwestern a conference crown for the 16th straight year. Niu's first match comes against 15th-ranked Silvia Garcia of Georgia, a 9-16 seed in the tournament at 12:30 p.m. CT Wednesday.

    Barnett and Corning have a current ITA doubles ranking of No. 29. The duo posted a 13-10 dual meet record this spring and peaked at No. 21 in the national rankings. The pairing's top win came on March 21 against second-ranked Kendal Woodard and Megan Kurey of Georgia Tech. The NU team squares off against the 34th-ranked duo of Caitlin McGraw and CeCe Witten of Kentucky at a time to be determined on Thursday.



    Raleigh Smith is representing the Northwestern men's team in the singles draw. The senior is currently ranked No. 49 and has been as high as No. 37. He sports a 13-10 record this season while competing at the top spot in the Wildcats' lineup. Smith holds five wins over ranked players this season. His opening-round matchup is scheduled for 8 a.m. CT Wednesday against 32nd-ranked Jason Tahir of Duke.

    The NCAA singles and doubles championships are being conducted at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the campus of the University of Georgia.
