EVANSTON, Ill. -- Senior Raleigh Smith and freshman Sam Shropshire were recognized as First-Team All-Big Ten selections on Thursday evening, and Shropshire was named Freshman of the Year. Junior Alex Pasareanu received one of twelve Big Ten Sportsmanship Awards.

As the team's only senior, Smith has had an impressive final season at Northwestern. Currently ranked No. 46 in the nation, he is also No. 28 in doubles with sophomore Mihir Kumar. The senior has posted career-high rankings in singles (No. 37) and doubles (No. 23 with Kumar) this season, all while playing the No. 1 position in both lineups.

It is the second time Smith has garnered a First-Team All-Big Ten accolade. He won the award in 2013 as well, along with then senior Spencer Wolf.

Shropshire achieved a perfect 10-0 record in Big Ten singles play in his inaugural season at Northwestern. The last Wildcat to remain undefeated in conference competition was Jeff Giraldo in 1992. Shropshire is the fourth Northwestern first-year to win Freshman of the Year, the most recent of whom was Tom Hanus in 2002.

Shropshire has anchored the No. 2 spot in Northwestern's singles lineup this season, and is ranked No. 120 in the nation. He is currently on a twelve-match win streak.

Pasareanu was recognized as the team's Big Ten Sportsmanship Award recipient. The student-athletes chosen to receive the honor are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These student-athletes must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.

No. 32 Northwestern is 20-9 on the season and 7-4 in conference play. The fifth seed in the Big Ten Tournament, the Wildcats face No. 34 Purdue, the fourth seed, in the quarterfinals Friday morning. The match begins at 9 a.m. CT, and will take place at the Michigan State Outdoor Courts.
