    NU Welcomes Middle Tennessee State, UIC on Sunday

    EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern squares off against a pair of opponents at Combe Tennis Center on Sunday as it hosts No. 43 Middle Tennessee State at 9 a.m. as well as UIC at 7:30 p.m.

    The Wildcats have posted a strong start in the spring season, opening with a 9-3 record. Last weekend, the `Cats lost two close 4-3 matches to Vanderbilt and Harvard before defeating Valparaiso 7-0.

    NU was tied with Vanderbilt going into the final match and held a 3-1 lead over Harvard but the Wildcats were unable to come up with the wins. In the nightcap, Northwestern shut out Valparaiso, winning five of six matches in straight sets.

    Sidarth Balaji led the `Cats with singles wins in all three matches and two doubles victories. Spencer Wolf upset No. 20 Gonzales Austin of Vanderbilt at No. 1 singles. Raleigh Smith, Mihir Kumar and Alex Pasareanu all won two singles and two doubles matches.

    Wolf is ranked No. 114 with a 10-7 season record. Balaji owns a 13-2 mark, while Smith is 12-4. Northwestern is ranked No. 33 in the ITA team rankings.

    Middle Tennessee State comes into the contest at No. 43 in the ITA team rankings. Ben Davis, with an 8-5 record, is the Blue Raiders' highest ranked player in singles at No. 98. MTSU opened its season with a 7-0 win over Lipscomb. The team has posted a 6-2 record to this point with a 7-0 loss to Duke and a 5-1 loss to Vanderbilt. The Blue Raiders defeated Virginia Tech 4-3 during the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. Jimmy Borendame is in his third season as head coach.

    UIC has opened the season with a 2-6 mark, including 0-5 on the road. The Flames beat Chicago State earlier this season, 7-0. Last weekend, UIC lost a tight 4-3 match to Bradley. The Flames' roster features two freshmen, one sophomore, three juniors and two senior transfers from Illinois. Hans Neufeld is in his 12th season as head coach.
