EVANSTON, Ill. -- Following a four-win day in which he dropped only 10 games in six sets Sunday for the Wildcats, Northwestern senior Josh Graves has been named Co-Big Ten Player of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.
Northwestern opened the 2012 dual slate with a pair of contests on Sunday at the Combe Tennis Center in Evanston, Ill. First, the 'Cats wiped out Ball State, 6-1, and came back to blank the UIC Flames, 7-0.
Graves (Milwaukee, Wis./Nicolet) paired up with longtime partner Spencer Wolf (Coral Springs, Fla./Laurel Springs) to win twice on the top doubles line. To start the day, the duo downed Ball State's Dalton Albertin and Ray Leonard, 8-6. Graves then played in the No. 2 singles spot for the Wildcats where he beat Zane Smith in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0.
After posting the first dual win of the season, Graves and his teammates were back at it against UIC. Graves partnered with Wolf once again versus UIC and the top pair breezed past Alex Raa and Maurizio Feoli, 8-0. In singles play, Graves was elevated to the No. 1 spot following a late scratch and he responded with a resounding, 6-1, 6-1 victory against Raa.
This is the second weekly honor of Graves' career. The first came on Jan. 26, 2010. He shares the award this week with Michigan State's Denis Bogatov.
Northwestern returns to action on Friday, January 20 when they travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala. to take on the Alabama Crimson Tide at 5 p.m. The 'Cats next play at the Combe Tennis Center on Sunday, January 22 versus William and Mary at 9:30 a.m.
