EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern hosts Ball State and cross-town rival UIC Sunday at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively, to begin its 2010 campaign at Combe Tennis Center. The 'Cats will look to repeat last season's stellar 8-0 start, which included victories over both of this weekend's opponents.
The Wildcats are led by third-year head coach Arvid Swan and senior captain Alex Sanborn (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid). Sanborn and junior Andrew McCarthy (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill) are the only upperclassmen on the roster, which features three sophomores and four freshmen. Just like 2009, Northwestern expects immediate contributions from its freshman Wildcats.
Live scoring of both matches will be available here.
SCOUTING THE CARDINALS
Sunday's match will also be the season-opener for Ball State, who is led by junior Eduardo Pavia. In last season's dual between the Cards and 'Cats, Pavia notched the only Cardinal point of the match with a close win over Tobias Reitz (Reinbeck, Germany/Sachsenwaldschule Reinbeck) at No. 2 singles.
Like the Wildcats, the Cardinals are a young team with only three upperclassmen on the roster so they will be looking for immediate impacts from their freshmen.
SCOUTING THE FLAMES
Prior to Sunday's match against the 'Cats, UIC faces DePaul Saturday afternoon so the Flames will have a match under their belts. UIC is led by seniors Bastian Harbo and Sebastian Lystad, who played No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively in last season's dual.
In the last match between the two teams, Northwestern notched a 7-0 victory, sweeping all nine matches and dropping only one set en route to its fifth victory of 2009.
LAST TIME OUT
The 'Cats concluded the fall season with a strong showing at the 2009 Big Ten Indoor Singles Championships in which McCarthy and Sanborn each advanced through the consolation to reach the final, which was left unplayed. Freshman Mark Schanerman
(Dr. Michael M. Krop HS/N. Miami Beach, Fla.) also reached the consolation semifinal, where he fell to McCarthy.
