    Men's Tennis Team Advances To Semifinals of NCAA Region IV Championship

    Second-Seeded 'Cats Down Seventh-Seed Louisville, 4-3

    NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- The Northwestern men's tennis team, ranked No. 31 nationally, defeated Louisville, 4-3, at the NCAA Region IV Championship today. With the win, the 'Cats advance to the semifinals to take on sixth-seeded Minnesota, tomorrow at 1 p.m. CT, at the Courtney Tennis Center.

    After dropping the doubles point, NU swept four of six singles matches en route to the victory.

    Senior Ry Tarpley, playing at the No. 3 singles spot, won the deciding match by defeating Louisville's Robby Robertson, 5-7, 6-1, 6-4. Marc Silva, the 1998 Big Ten Player of the Year (No. 2), junior Doug Bohaboy (No. 3) and sophomore Martin Bengtsson (No. 5) each won their respective singles matches. With the win, Silva improves to 28-5 on the year, with 26 of his wins coming in straight sets.

    This is the second-consecutive year that NU has advanced to the semifinals. Last season, NU won the Region IV Championship and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16.
