    Northwestern's Silva Wins Big Ten Indoor Tennis Singles Championship

    Talented Wildcat upsets teammate and top seed Alex Witt in championship match

    EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Junior Marc Silva (Telford, Pa./Pennridge) won the Big Ten Indoor Tennis Singles Championship today at the Michigan State Tennis Facility.

    Silva, ranked No. 48th nationally and 10th in the tournament, upset NU teammate and top-seeded Alex Witt (Houston Texas/Memorial) 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) to claim the championship. Silva is the 13th Wildcat to win the crown and it is the 17th time an NU player has garnered the title. Current tour pro Todd Martin was the last Wildcat to win the conference singles championship (1990).

    Silva defeated second-seeded Oliver Love of Illinois 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the championship match. Witt, ranked No. 15 nationally, defeated teammate Doug Bohaboy (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) 6-2, 6-4 in the semifinals.

    The Wildcats, who are ranked 21st nationally, had four players in the quarterfinals and three in the semifinals.
