MADISON, Wis. -
Northwestern's competitors got off to a good start at the 2012 Big Ten Indoor Championships hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Madison on Friday.
On the doubles side, Raleigh Smith and Sidarth Balaji teamed up to post two victories to advance to the tournament's semifinal round. After receiving an opening-round bye, the duo cruised to an 8-1 win over Harry Jardun and Denis Bogatov of Michigan State. Matched up against fourth-seeded team of Jakhongir Jalalov and Oskar Wikberg of Wisconsin, the Northwestern pair posted an 8-5 win to move on to Saturday's semifinals.
NU's two other doubles teams each opened with a win before being forced into the back draw. Alex Pasareanu and Mihir Kumar started their day with an 8-5 victory over Szymon Tatarczyk and Arthur Dobradin of Purdue. After receiving a bye into the quarterfinals, the Wildcat pair fell 8-3 to Petr Satral and Alexander Kostanov of Wisconsin. On the other side of the bracket, Chris Jackman and Fedor Baev earned an 8-6 win over Matt Hagan and Jonas Dierckx of Iowa before falling to the top-seeded Michigan State duo of Aaron Pfister and Drew Lied, 8-1.
In singles action, two of Northwestern's three individuals who were in action posted victories. Baev began his tournament by cruising to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Michigan State's Tyler Richmond. Thanks to top-seeded Spencer Newman of Michigan withdrawing, Baev then earned a bye into the tournament's round of 16.
Pasareanu was also victorious in his first match of the draw as he earned a 7-5, 6-2 win over Doug Zade of Michigan State. Alberto Zanotti was forced to the back draw as he fell to Michigan's Alex Buzzi 6-1, 6-2. Receiving first-round byes were Balaji, Jackman, Kumar and Smith.
