2009 Big Ten Singles Day One Results
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Sophomore Eric Spector (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) advanced Saturday to the round of 16 at the 2009 Big Ten Singles Championship hosted by Michigan State. Spector is the lone Wildcat remaining in the main draw, but five 'Cats are still alive in the consolation draw.
In Sunday's action, Spector will face Penn State junior Eddie Bourchier for a spot in the quarterfinals. With this result, Spector has already improved upon his second round appearance in 2008.
Sophomore Tobias Reitz (Reinbeck, Germany/Sachsenwaldschule Reinbeck) was the only other Wildcat to win a main draw match. Reitz defeated Minnesota's Jonathan Hadash in the first round before falling to Wisconsin Badger Luke Rassow-Kantor 6-1, 6-4, in the second round. He will face Purdue's Paul Foley in consolation action on Sunday.
Senior Alex Sanborn (Houston, Texax/Kinkaid) was defeated by MSU's Ronnie Hulewicz, 6-4, 6-3, in first round action. He won a tough three-setter in consolation play over Iowa's Will Vasos and will look to continue his run Sunday.
Junior Andrew McCarthy (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill) dropped his first round main draw match, but is still alive in consolation after defeating MSU's Joe Vallee. He will next face PSU's Guillaume St. Maurice.
NU's four freshmen each lost in the first round Saturday, but three are still alive in the consolation bracket. Mark Schanerman (North Miami Beach, Fla./Dr. Michael M. Krop HS) dropped a tough first-round match, 6-4 in the third, but bounced back in consolation. He will face Iowa's Austen Kauss Sunday.
Sidarth Balaji (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) and Chris Jackman (Key Biscayne, Fla./Gulliver Prep) each dropped two matches Saturday and are out of the tournament. Spencer Wolf (Coral Springs, Fla./Laurel Springs) dropped his main draw match, but topped Iowa's Reinoud Haal to advance in consolation. he will face MSU's Jason Norville in Sunday's action.
