IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Northwestern's men's tennis squad wrapped up the 2011 fall campaign Sunday at the Big Ten Men's Indoor Tennis Championships, hosted by the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa.

Day three featured more matches in the singles draw with five Wildcats in action at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Center. Freshman Nikhil Jayashankar (Saratoga, Calif./Saratoga was the first 'Cat to hit the court in his 8 a.m. match against Minnesota's Eric Frueh. Jayashankar struck first with a 7-5 win in the opening set, but Freuh rebounded to win the second frame, 6-4, and the 10-point tiebreaker, 10-2.

Sophomore Raleigh Smith (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) was also in action early Sunday morning. Smith played Michigan State's Austin Brooks in an extremely competitive match, in which both players pushed one another to the brink. Like Jayashankar, Smith claimed victory in the first set against Brooks, 7-5, before his opponent returned the favor by an identical score in the second set. The tiebreaker went to the limit as well, but unfortunately Smith came up short, 12-10.

At 9:30 a.m., Alberto Zanotti (Valencia, Venezuela/C.I. Carabobo), Eric Spector (Northbook, Ill./Glenbrook North) and Joshua Graves (Milwaukee, Wis./Nicolet) took the court in back draw showdowns. Zanotti was knocked off in his first match on Sunday by Stephen Vogl of Indiana in straight sets, 7-6, 6-4. Spector claimed the first set in match against Wisconsin's Billy Bertha, 6-4, before Bertha retired, which allowed Spector to advance. In the next round against Michigan State's Ron Hulewicz, Spector was defeated in two sets, 6-3, 6-3.

Graves enjoyed the most success of any of Northwestern's entries on Sunday. First, Graves defeated Iowa's Will Vasos in come-from-behind fashion. After dropping the first set, 6-2, the Milwaukee, native won the second set, 6-4. In the 10-point tiebreaker, Graves outlasted Vasos, 11-9. In his next match against Vogl, Graves avenged Zanotti's loss by defeating the Hoosier, 6-4, 6-0. Graves continued to roll in his third match against Michigan State's William Davis. The Wildcat won in straight sets yet again, this time 6-4, 6-2 to conclude his run in the tournament.
